Actinic Keratosis
What is actinic keratosis?
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly patches or spots on the skin caused by years of sun exposure. They’re considered precancerous and can develop into skin cancer if left untreated.
How to Tell If You Have It
- Rough, dry, or crusty patches that feel like sandpaper
- Flat or slightly raised spots, often red or brown
- Commonly found on face, ears, scalp, arms, or hands
- May be itchy or tender when touched
Why It Happens
UV radiation damages the skin over time, especially in fair-skinned individuals. AKs are more common in people over 40 who spend time outdoors.
